Catalogue des livres rares, [circa 1699].

Manuscript, on paper, in a single cursive hand, of a library catalog. The manuscript opens with a note, "Maniè€re de bien faire un catalogue," which endorses a thematic arrangement inspired by the system used by Jacques-Auguste de Thou and by Jean Garnier's Systema bibliothecae (1678). The note is followed by an alphabetical listing of "livres rares," many entries in which remark on the quality of specific editions and mention censorship of particular texts. The books listed date from between 1486 and 1699; several 1699 entries pay particular attention to a contemporary controversy concerning the Benedictine editions of the works of St. Augustine. The alphabetical list is followed by a thematic arrangement, which begins with "Bibles" and ends with "Miscellanea."
